One of the simplest ways to change an environment, giving it a new look, is with a good paint job. However, the types of paint are numerous. What is the best paint for the wall? What paint to use on the tile? Can I paint the floor? To answer these and any other questions you may have, we’ve created this ink types guide.

First, before painting any surface, it needs to be clean, dry, and regular. So get rid of any dirt, moisture or mold, and correct imperfections in the place with spackle or mortar. If you need to apply any of these substances, it is recommended to let it dry for 28 days before painting.

See now the types of paint available on the market and everything you need to know to make the right choice 😉.

PVA paint

PVA paint, also known as PVA latex, is the most used on interior walls. You must, however, be careful when cleaning, as if you rub a lot with a damp cloth, the ink can come out. Therefore, do not use it outdoors, as it is not resistant to rain.

This type of paint is water-based, it dries quickly, does not have a strong smell, it is a paint for interior walls and ceilings.

Acrylic paint

This type of paint differs from PVA paint because it contains, in its composition, resins that waterproof the paint. This makes cleaning easier as it can be wet and used outdoors.

It also has better coverage compared to PVA paint, which means it requires fewer coats.

This type of paint is water-based, with a slightly stronger smell than PVA paint, quick-drying and suitable for walls and ceilings, whether indoors or outdoors.

You can find acrylic paint in three different finishes:

1 – matte finish, without shine, leaves the wall with a velvety appearance and hides imperfections;

2 – satin finish, with a weak shine;

3 – semi-gloss finish, it is the acrylic paint that reflects the light more, therefore it highlights imperfections.

On the market, there are also acrylic paints considered more than waterproof, as they repel liquids. They are widely used in children’s rooms as they resist heavy washing to remove marker marks. This type of paint is called washable or super washable acrylic paint.

Enamel paint

This type of paint is not suitable for walls, as the paint can have blisters and peeling. This paint should be used on wood or metals. It is a very resistant paint, as it creates a film on the surface, which can be easily washed off. Due to its high resistance, this type of paint is suitable for outdoor areas.

It is an oil-based paint, with a strong smell and slow drying.

It is a paint with a lot of shine, even in the matte versions.

Water-based enamel paint

Water-based enamel paint retains the characteristics of oil enamel paint, such as high gloss and good strength, but it has a weaker smell and faster drying. Its use, however, remains indicated in woods and metals.

The resistance of this type of paint is superior to that of latex and acrylic paints, but less than that of oil-based enamel paint, which is why it is recommended for indoor environments.

Epoxy paint

This type of paint is very durable and resistant, more than those mentioned above. It is a good option for the floor, as it can even handle people walking on it.

This type of paint is used a lot for painting tiles, and it really works. The tiles, however, have a very smooth surface, and this lack of porosity decreases the resistance of epoxy paint, especially when used in areas that receive constant moisture, such as the shower stall.

You find this paint with a matte finish in light colors; darker colors are only available with a glossy finish.

It is oil-based and has a very strong smell and slow drying. This type of paint is suitable for floors and tiles.

Acrylic or latex paint?

The main difference between the two types of paint is the resin in greater quantity in the acrylic paint, which gives it greater durability and resistance. Therefore, it can be used in more humid environments, such as bathrooms and washrooms, as well as in external places, such as facades and backyards, as it has greater permeability (therefore, it can also be washed).

In addition, acrylic paint is recognized for having better quality than latex paint, and for this reason, its price is a little higher. Another difference is in the finish. While acrylic paint can be satin or glossy, latex only offers a matte finish.
